Police officer injured after shooting on Detroit’s West Side, suspect arrested

DETROIT – A Detroit police officer was hospitalized Wednesday with a gunshot wound to the hand.

Police responded to the 12000 block of Linwood shortly after 8 a.m. on Sept. 25 for a report of a man in his underwear jumping on several cars. Police said the man appeared to be psychotic. By the time police arrived, the man had already left the scene.

At around 10 a.m., an officer saw the same man at a gas station after patrolling the area where the situation had previously occurred. When the officer approached him, the man ran away.

The officer pursued the man until they reached the porch of a home in the 2400 block of Highland. Police said the man resisted arrest, and then he allegedly grabbed the officer’s gun and shot him in the hand.

According to police, the man tried to shoot the officer again, but the gun jammed. The man ran away from the officer with the gun. He was later found a few blocks away and arrested.

According to police, the suspect was not injured.

The officer was sent to Henry Ford because of his hand injury, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

The man was also admitted to hospital for psychiatric examination.
