NFL season 2024 – Rookie quarterbacks in week 3: Caleb Williams raises question marks

The 2024 NFL season is in full swing. This week, numerous rookie quarterbacks also started their careers – one of them experienced an absolute highlight. ran gives an advantage.

The quarterback class in the 2024 NFL Draft was one for the history books. A total of eleven playmakers were selected, six of them in the first round. More than at any time since 1983. The expectations of the young QBs are accordingly very high.

While the two top picks Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels already had their positions as starters secured from week one, one or two early-drafted college stars still have to wait for their big chance.

However, as expected, the rookies’ performances also fluctuate from week to week.

ran Gives you an overview of how the young signal callers did.

The most important things in brief

Caleb Williams (Chicago Bears)

  • 33/52 passes, 363 passing yards, 2 passing TDs, 2 INTs, 1 rush for 8 yards
  • 4:21 p.m. @ Indianapolis Colts

The spell is finally broken.

In the third game of his young NFL career, first overall pick Caleb Williams finally scored his first touchdown.

However, it was not enough for a victory in the direct duel with Anthony Richardson, the 4th pick in the 2023 draft.

Williams made by far the most pass attempts compared to the previous teams. However, quantity is not the same as quality. 363 passing yards seem strong at first glance, but only 63.5 percent of successful passes are in need of improvement. And in the running game, only one rush compared to five in each of the previous two games is a clear step backwards.

And so, even after the 22-year-old’s long-awaited first two passing touchdowns, as was the case last week, the question marks still predominate as to how good the Bears really are this season and whether the contender status that was proclaimed in many places in the offseason did not come much too early.

Packers coach reacted superbly to fire alarm

Jayden Daniels (Washington Commanders)

  • 21/23 passes, 254 passing yards, 2 passing TDs, 0 INTs, 12 rushes for 39 yards, 1 rushing TD
  • 38:33 @ Cincinnati Bengals

The Commanders made a real mark in the Monday night game. Washington’s offense played well against the Bengals in the critical phase of the game – and rookie Jayden Daniels in particular.

The 23-year-old was previously ridiculed for saying that his statistics on the first two days of the game were just about as good as they could have been because the team wasn’t taking any risks with him. “They don’t let him do much. They keep it really easy for him. Nice college offense,” Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt teased before the matchup – dangerous last words.

However, in the win over the Bengals, Daniels proved his critics wrong, especially in the decisive phase. It was quite simply one of the best performances by a rookie QB in NFL history.

The youngster put up some really strong stats with 21 of 23 successful passes for 254 passing yards, 2 passing TDs and not a single interception. He also had a fantastic game-winning TD of 27 yards to star receiver Terry McLaurin. And he even managed to run for another one.

In addition to the impressive win, however, Daniels and his team accomplished something that is quickly becoming even more impressive, as the franchise has now scored on every play except kneel downs in two consecutive games.

On Monday, Washington had a total of eight drives: five touchdowns, one field goal and two that ended in kneel downs at the end of each half. In the second week against the New York Giants, the Commanders had already recorded seven field goals and one kneel down. This was also practically a 100 percent offensive rate, which is extremely rare in the NFL.

Since 2000, according to CBS, there have only been ten games in which a team has scored on every play (excluding kneel downs). That’s a chance of over 1 in 1,300 considering there were 12,990 games including the playoffs during that time period. But the Commanders have now done it twice in a row, which is a completely insane 1 in 1.7 million chance.

Chiefs favored again? NFL fans rage after referee decision

Bo Nix (Denver Broncos)

  • 25/36 passes, 216 passing yards, 0 passing TDs, 0 INTs, 9 rushes for 47 yards, 1 rushing TD
  • 26:7 @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

It’s possible! After two defeats at the start of the season, the Broncos landed a respectable win against a highly regarded playoff candidate.

And that is also thanks to their young playmaker. Last week, during the loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, people were still laughing at the fact that Bo Nix had made it too easy for the opposing defense with his cautious play and the Broncos’ apparently very thin playbook.

The 24-year-old then played his strongest game to date against the Bucs. Although he was still waiting for a passing touchdown after week three, Nix showed significant improvement and played largely error-free. With a pass rate of 69.4 percent, he also showed by far the best performance of the last season. After two interceptions each at the start of the season, the young playmaker fortunately did not make a single one this time.

And the O-line did the rest, as Tampa Bay’s pass rusher didn’t have a single sack. Nix also impressed with strong new rushes for almost 50 yards and a run score.

The other quarterbacks from round one

Despite his NFL debut in the final phase of the 3:24 loss against the New York Jets, Drake Maye will have to wait a little longer before the number 3 pick in the draft is allowed to start with the Foxborough franchise.

Head coach Jerod Mayo emphasized the day after the party that he will continue to stick with veteran Jacoby Brissett: “Jacoby is our quarterback until I say he’s not anymore.”

Maye, meanwhile, recorded four passes for 22 passing yards out of eight pass attempts in a very clear game. He also made two passes for a total of 12 rushing yards. However, the 22-year-old was also sacked twice in that short time.

Number 8 pick Michael Penix Jr. will have a tough time with the Atlanta Falcons this season, as he was signed with a perspective. Starting quarterback Kirk Cousins received an expensive four-year contract in the summer. This means that the season will be an expected test of patience for the 24-year-old.

Number 10 pick JJ McCarthy of the Minnesota Vikings tore a meniscus in the preseason and will be out injured for the entire season. His backup Sam Darnold, meanwhile, led the Vikings to a sensational 3-0 start.

The later draft picks

Fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler (New Orleans Saints) lost the race for Derek Carr’s backup position to Jake Haener in the offseason and was again not on the active roster in Week 3 – as was sixth-round pick Joe Milton III (New England Patriots). ).

Fifth-round pick Jordan Travis is still on the New York Jets’ Reserve/Non-Football Injury List. Sixth-round pick Devin Leary (Baltimore Ravens) and seventh-round pick Michael Pratt (drafted by the Green Bay Packers, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) are on their respective teams’ practice squads.
