Precipitation

From Thursday to Saturday, the storm “Aitor” will pass north of Switzerland. By Thursday evening, 20 to 50 mm of rain had fallen in many places, and in some areas even up to 80 mm. The least rain will fall in the foehn regions such as northern Graubünden. On Friday, the partly persistent rain will turn into showers, which will continue on Saturday, especially on the northern slopes of the Alps.

The heavy rainfall can cause streams and small rivers to swell. Local flooding and landslides cannot be ruled out. It is advisable to keep drains clear and avoid torrents.

SRF Weather

With the cold front, temperatures will drop significantly on Saturday and the snow line will drop to 1800 m in the inner Alps and to 1400 m along the foothills of the Alps. This means that winter tires will be necessary on the higher Alpine passes.

Southwest storm and foehn

During the night into Thursday and on Thursday, strong to stormy foehn winds will blow in the Alpine valleys. Wind speeds in typical foehn valleys will reach 75 to 110 km/h locally. At the same time, storm and isolated hurricane gusts will occur on the Jura heights and in the mountains.

What is a Weather Watch?

Open box
Close box

A Weather Watch indicates that a potentially dangerous weather situation is expected. Usually, no SRF weather warnings have been issued at the time of publication. A Weather Watch is issued a few days before the expected weather event and is continuously updated. The closer the event, the more accurate the forecast. If the event is already underway, the Weather Watch contains both an interim assessment and a forecast of what is still to be expected.

A Weather Watch is only issued when large parts of Switzerland are affected by a potentially dangerous weather situation.
