A birthday serenade for shooting star Artemas

In the front row, right in front of the stage, there are two very small girls. They are perhaps 1.50 or 1.55 meters tall and are waiting patiently until it finally starts. Now just not a two-meter man who is always standing in front of you at a concert or sitting in front of you in the cinema. The two girls are lucky, they can see their star, who starts shortly after 9 p.m., very well.

A very cool number…

Artemas Diamandis is one of the shooting stars of the music year 2024, and hardly any radio listener has been able to ignore his hit “I Like The Way You Kiss Me” in recent months. Even on the often rather boring WDR2, formerly known as the “housewife station”, the piece, which is only 2:21 minutes long, was played – albeit with the awkward introduction: “Now we’re playing something different, now comes a very cool number.” Well then…

On Tuesday evening, the now 25-year-old was enthusiastically celebrated by a good 1,000 mostly young fans in the sold-out Live Music Hall after the very good support act Asal – enthusiastic singing along and screaming included. After the first four numbers, there was a serenade for the artist, because it was his birthday the evening before. Initially cool with sunglasses, Artemas quickly shed the attitude of a pop star and delivered a concert with his band that was only 70 minutes long but nonetheless convincing.

Breakthrough one year ago

The Englishman with Cypriot roots recorded his first piece of music at the tender age of 17, but in the leaden Corona period, when many people had to spend a lot of time at home, he became the Artemas phenomenon. In his room, he taught himself songwriting and in 2023 released a new single every few weeks, uploaded it to YouTube – and with “If U Think I’m Pretty” he had his breakthrough about a year ago.

When “I Like The Way You Kiss Me” followed in March of this year, it was immediately clear that this song would storm the charts in half of Europe. With a driving beat, the dark post-punk/new wave note and his distorted, high-pitched voice, Artemas hit the nerve of Gen Z.

There and back

In the Live Music Hall, it is mostly teenagers or young women in relationships who are eagerly waiting for their new star. Most of them don’t have the patience of the two girls in the first row on the right. They are all waiting for “I Like The Way You Kiss Me”, which of course only comes at the very end. Before the last note has even been played, most of them have stormed out of the hall in Ehrenfeld, even though it is only a quarter past ten. Yes, they have now and certainly immediately shared photos and videos of Artemas on social media. That a good show sometimes lasts longer than the proof that you have been somewhere you need to be – she perhaps still needs to learn that at her age.
