Investigations into fire at J & J Snack Foods in Holly Ridge continue

Investigations into fire at J & J Snack Foods in Holly Ridge continue

HOLLY RIDGE, NC (WITN) – The investigation is ongoing after a fire broke out at a food distribution facility in Holly Ridge on August 19.

Multiple fire crews responded to a call for a fire at J & J Snack Foods on Sounds Road. While crews extinguished the fire, many streets surrounding the building were closed, including N. Dyson Road, Kraft Street, N. Himes Street and Sounds Road.

“When the first unit arrived, heavy fire and smoke were already visible from outside. Our efforts to fight the fire were unsuccessful due to safety reasons. By the time we got there, a large fire had already broken out.”

Holly Ridge was one of the first responders, followed by Surf City, South Onslow and Verona fire departments. Officials say they have not heard anything about the cause of the fire as it is still under investigation.

Because the fire broke out during work hours, J&J Snack Foods employees knew they had to call the fire department.

“There were workers inside,” said Chief Longo. “It was in the middle of a workday, so when they noticed the problem, they were able to get out safely. No injuries were reported.”

Although a restoration team is working on the building throughout the day, some residents continue to express concerns about their safety.

“There were concerns that the facility might be leaking hazardous materials,” said Chief Longo. “Everything has been isolated, so there is currently no danger to the public.”

Chief Longo says if there is a threat, the public will be the first to know.
