Thunderstorms and cold fronts approaching

Thunderstorms and cold fronts approaching

An intensifying cold front will bring renewed thunderstorm chances to Texas tonight and Wednesday. Before the thunderstorm chances tonight, there is a chance of isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms this afternoon across parts of the Concho Valley, Hill Country, Central Texas, South Texas, Brazos Valley and Southeast Texas. The afternoon thunderstorms may bring small hail, gusty winds and brief periods of heavy rain. Most people will not get wet.

The chance of thunderstorms tonight is comparatively higher and more widespread. The highest chance of thunderstorms will be in Texoma, North Texas and Northeast Texas after 8 p.m. and through Wednesday morning. Some storms may be strong, with hailstones up to the size of quarters, wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph and localized flooding.

Over the next few days, isolated showers and thunderstorms may bring total rainfall of 2.5 to 1 inch (6.35 to 2.54 centimeters) across the eastern half of Texas.

Thunderstorms will continue to move south with the cold front on Wednesday, but rain won’t be everywhere. Storms should move south with the cold front at a decent pace, so we’re not particularly concerned about storms lingering over one spot for long. Cooler temperatures are expected for the northern two-thirds of Texas on Wednesday and Thursday.

It will remain hot in the southern third of Texas, with afternoon temperatures in the 30s, and temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees are expected across Texas over the weekend.

The soon-to-be #Helene is forecast to become a destructive hurricane for Florida’s Gulf Coast. Although the system is still disorganized this morning, we expect it to strengthen into a tropical storm in the northern Caribbean by the afternoon.

A significant, rapid intensification phase is expected after moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico tomorrow. A major hurricane is expected to develop in northwest Florida on Thursday afternoon. A potentially devastating storm surge of up to 15 feet is expected near and east of landfall, with a destructive storm surge expected from Tampa Bay down to Key West. Helene will become a major hurricane. Such an enormous wind field will result in a storm surge of greater strength and magnitude than usual across much of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Although there may be some showers in Northeast Texas on Friday and Saturday, little to no impact is expected in Texas. Dry weather is possible across much of Texas during the last days of September.
