What’s wrong with Alexander Zverev? This question has been asked many times in recent weeks, including by himself. For some time now, Zverev has been complaining about feeling unwell, coughing and a certain weakness – in Hamburg, at the Olympic Games and also in New York at the US Open.

Last weekend at the Laver Cup, Zverev also seemed to be in poor shape and was rarely seen at his colleagues’ parties.

Now it seems clear what the trigger is. “Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, which explains the recent physical difficulties I’ve had over the last few months,” Zverev told dpa. “I have to take care of my health first so that I can compete again as soon as possible.”

Zverev cancels in Beijing

Zverev had recently cancelled the ATP tournament in Beijing. “I am very disappointed that I had to withdraw from the China Open. I will miss my Chinese fans in Beijing and hope to be able to play in front of them again soon.”

Zverev now hopes to be able to play again at the Masters tournament in Shanghai from October 2 to 13. There are also tournaments in Vienna and Paris as well as the ATP Finals in Turin. Zverev is therefore already qualified as second in the annual race.

However, it is still unclear whether Zverev will also take part in the Davis Cup finals in Malaga at the end of November. At the moment it doesn’t seem like that, Zverev has not been nominated for now. However, a fifth place has not yet been filled so that Zverev can be nominated if necessary. If he is fit again by then – and still has the strength for the final stretch of the season.

Only recently, the Hamburg native had complained about his busy schedule.
