Rapidly advancing front triggers serious risks in the Red River Valley

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – A severe thunderstorm swept through OKC early Monday evening, producing large hail up to 2.75 inches in diameter in the Village.

The system responsible is a trough that moves through the state. The biggest danger with these storms is the potential for large hailstones, over 1 inch in diameter. Strong winds over 60 mph are also a danger.

The Storm Prediction Center highlights areas around Oklahoma City south of Dallas, with a low risk across the OKC metropolitan area. Damaging winds and heavy hail appear to be the biggest concerns.

The timing will be in the afternoon hours, but there is some uncertainty about how far south these storms will persist. Dallas could see these storms overnight – if they even make it that far.

The good news? An intensifying surge of cooler air will initially trigger the storms, but will then settle into parts of the southern Plains. The result will be that daytime highs will return to near seasonal averages.

It could get cooler in this extended weather forecast. We’ll show you whether that’s to be expected in your central regional weather forecast every hour at :30 a.m.!
