With Android15 Google is making some changes to the notification system and is finally introducing a function that has been in development for a long time: The new “Cooldown Notifications” feature is designed to protect users from annoying notifications that can pop up every second. These can be given a break of up to two minutes.

Google has repeatedly tried to get a grip on the mass of notifications that Android users receive every day – although of course they have to manage the automated balancing act between information and spam. Be it with notification channels, alternative categorizations, pre-filters or the rough and tumble “do not disturb” method. Now they are taking a slightly different approach to the issue and will ensure that users are not bothered by too many notifications in quick succession. A cooldown function is to be introduced in one of the next releases.

Cooling notifications for Android 15

In the animation above you can see how this feature will work in the next version. It’s mainly about preventing a lot of notifications in quick succession. Something like when a person in Messenger sends a lot of short messages one after the other instead of putting them in one message. You could also call it emoji spam. From the third message onwards the notification sound is turned down and no further notifications are displayed. However, these can be accessed at any time by pulling down the bar.

The cooldown phase lasts exactly two minutes and only applies to the associated notifications. The new feature can be found in Android 15 QPR1 and is expected to be rolled out with the expected Android 15 feature drop in December.
