Sold out – up to 50 percent discount

Sold out – up to 50 percent discount

After the death of the founder and bankruptcy, the Hamburg furniture store “Die Wäscherei” has to close permanently. Before that, the stocks will be sold.

This week the public sale begins in the furniture store “Die Wäscherei” in City Nord. For over 25 years the furniture store was an institution for people looking for unusual furniture and extravagant design. During the first part of the sale, which is exclusively for regular customers, everyone can shop in the “Wäscherei” from September 26th.

After the death of founder Michael Eck in spring 2024 and the company’s insolvency, an era comes to an end. Around a month after the long-time managing director died, the company filed for insolvency on May 17. Later, an investor who wanted to take over the furniture store withdrew his offer at the last minute. The consequence: “The Laundry” had to close in August.

Schott Räumungsprofis GmbH has been commissioned to carry out the sale. Its boss, René Schott, says: “It is an emotional time, both for us and for many former employees.” Some of the long-standing employees are still with us until the end and are helping with the sale, although it is difficult to say goodbye.

An employee who worked in the lamp department for 17 years and still helps out now told the “Hamburger Abendblatt”: “There is no place in Hamburg that can offer this combination of design, diversity and creativity.”

Despite high demand during the sale for regular customers, the exhibition is still well filled. “90 percent of the goods are new,” says Marvin Schott, who runs the sales department together with his father René. Sofa sets, dining room chairs and dining tables are particularly in demand, but also small furniture, home accessories and garden furniture.

There are various discounts at the start of the last sale. Garden furniture is reduced by 40 percent, and individual items such as individual chairs are even discounted by 50 percent. The other goods in the “Laundry” range are currently reduced by 20 to 30 percent. Regular customers will also receive an additional ten percent off the already reduced price until the weekend.

The sale is scheduled to run until the beginning of December. Any remaining stock that has not found a buyer by then will be taken over by the Schott company and resold. The opening hours of the furniture store on Mexikoring are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On September 29, the Sunday when shops are open in Hamburg, “Die Wäscherei” will also be open. “We did this deliberately to spread out the frequency a bit so that not everyone storms the store at once on Saturday,” said Marvin Schott, explaining this decision.
