“With the ID3 GTX Fire & Ice, we are underlining how highly emotional our sporty top model is,” says VW design chief Andreas Mindt, “our design team had incredible fun reinterpreting the iconic 90s design and thus developing it further.” It sounds a bit like whistling in the woods, because the ID.3 has so far been neither a successful model nor an image carrier for the Wolfsburg-based company.

ID.3 GTX Fire & Ice: Tradition goes electric

But even if the seats hide the Bogner logo with zippers and the cool signet on the C-pillar is missing, the specially made VW ID3 GTX with its 240 kW / 326 hp and a top speed of 200 km/h is a show. But then it must also become a reality as a small series and must not remain a one-off from Lake Maggiore. Because the edition models from Wolfsburg have a tradition, especially with the Polo and Golf, which would currently be more than fitting for the car manufacturer from Lower Saxony as an exclamation mark for desirable products.

Volkswagen’s special models: No review without Golf

The Golf in particular, as a bestseller throughout Europe, has created numerous rolling monuments with its very different special models as a rolling marketing measure – especially in the 1980s and 1990s – on which the ID family could now build more. While editions such as the Manhattan or Madison of the Golf II were more for the masses, the Pirelli Golf had already thrilled GTI fans in 1983. Versions such as the Golf II Fire & Ice or the particularly spectacular VW Golf II G60 Limited with all-wheel drive, 210 hp and no double headlight grille brought real luxury and true exclusivity.

Volkswagen’s special models: the iconic convertibles

Cabriolet fans enjoyed the special model Quartet for years, celebrated the electric fabric roof of the Acapulco, the black or red Sportline, and yet they all only dreamed of editions like the Etienne Aigner or the Classic Line with heated leather seats, electric windows, sports seats, Radio Gamma and exclusive metallic paint. The new edition of the Classic Line in the Golf IV Cabriolet was nowhere near as cult-like as the newer convertible models were never able to match the popular strawberry basket built from 1979 to 1993.

But there were also special models of the smaller Polo; sometimes as an unspectacular Joker, sometimes as an exclusive Color Concept with brightly colored leather seats and matching paint on the outside – even as a station wagon.
