Seattle Mariners get big chance due to Houston Astros injury concerns

The Seattle Mariners beat the Houston Astros 6-1 on Monday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston. With the win, the Mariners are now 81-76 on the season. Although it’s unlikely, they still have a glimmer of hope for the playoffs with five games remaining.

Seattle is now 4.0 games behind the Astros in the American League West and 1.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers in the American League wild card.

However, since the M’s are playing this series against the Astros, they were lucky because Astros star Yordan Alvarez will be out for the rest of the series due to a knee injury sustained on Sunday.

According to Chandler Rome, Astros reporter, on social media:

Yordan Alvarez sprained his right knee and will not play in this series against the Mariners, Joe Espada said. The Astros have not ruled out Alvarez’s return this regular season.

You don’t want anyone to get hurt, of course, but the fact remains that Alvarez not playing is a huge advantage for the Mariners going forward. He is one of the most feared hitters in all of baseball and has a .308 batting average with 35 home runs and 86 RBIs this season. He has also put up great numbers against the M’s in his career.

He hit a game-winning home run in the first game of the ALDS against the Mariners that gave Houston the win, and he also hit a home run in the second game of the series.

Game 2 of this series will be played on Tuesday night at 5:05 p.m. PT.
