Former WWE star leaves, Eddie Kingston update, “GrandSlam” card expanded

Former WWE star leaves, Eddie Kingston update, “GrandSlam” card expanded

In September 2020, AEW brought Miro, a former WWE wrestler (Rusev, real name: Miroslaw Barnjaschew), into its roster. Miro received a lot of attention at the beginning. In the summer of 2021, he was able to hold the TNT title for a few months.

Since then, not much has happened to the former AEW audience favorite. His last match took place in December 2023. In the meantime, the Bulgarian-born man only made private headlines when he and his long-time wife Lana made their separation public.

Specifically, Miro has only competed in 11 matches since the beginning of 2022, none this year. In his last appearance, he defeated Andrade El Idolo at the pay-per-view “Worlds End” on December 30. Andrade was on the verge of returning to WWE at the time.

Now Fightful reports that Miro has asked to be released from his current AEW contract. The former WWE Intercontinental Champion signed a two-year deal with AEW in September 2020 and then prematurely extended it for another four years in spring 2022.

According to this, AEW boss Tony Khan could leave the 38-year-old on the bench for quite a while. But at this point in time, it must be said that this would not have helped either side. It remains unclear whether Miro will terminate the contract because he wants to wrestle somewhere else or generally has other plans for his life.

Eddie Kingston: Hopeful after injury, but the break will last longer

Eddie Kingston is in a completely different situation at the moment. The first AEW Continental Champion would certainly rather be back competing in All Elite Wrestling matches sooner rather than later. However, after the serious leg injury he sustained at a New Japan event in May, his break will last a while.

At NJPW “Resurgence” on May 11, Kingston sustained the unfortunate injury in a last-man-standing match against Gabe Kidd. The 42-year-old crashed through a table during a suplex from the edge of the ring to the outside and hit his right leg on the ring barrier. In addition to a broken leg, Kingston tore his cruciate ligament and his meniscus was also damaged.

“I can now walk a little again. That’s why I’m getting nervous, I’m itching,” Kingston explained in the “The DAVINci Report” podcast, adding that he has started light training again. But the road back to the ring is still a long one, and a return is not planned until the second quarter of 2025.

Kingston thanked everyone for being able to be part of a company like AEW today. During his independent days, long-term injuries were a mental burden, also from a financial perspective. Now he is still being paid: “This company is blessed. It is helping me even during my break.”

Good for Eddie: This way he can fully recover before attempting the next one!

Lucha comeback at “GrandSlam”, card update

AEW has announced another match for the “GrandSlam” on Twitter/X. Luchador Dralistico will have his first match of the year. In a 3-way Lucha Libre spectacle, he will face The Beast Mortos and Hologram.

Below there is clarity about how the many announced matches for the stadium show on Wednesday will be divided between the two TV broadcasts. After the live Dynamite edition, “Collision” will be pre-recorded for Saturday.

The line-up for AEW Dynamite (September 23rd):

  • At least according to the storyline, it is unclear whether Bryan Danielson will compete. Of course, almost all viewers firmly assume this.
  • The line-up for AEW Collision (September 26):

  • AEW Continental Title Eliminator Match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Sammy Guevara
  • Tornado Trios Match: Chris Jericho, Big Bill, Bryan Keith vs. Orange Cassidy, Kyle O’Reilly, Mark Briscoe

Also announced: AEW Trios Champions Claudio Castagnoli, PAC and Wheeler Yuta. After eliminating their potential opponents (Private Party and Komander) last week, neither the opponents nor the TV show on which this potential match will take place have been determined. There is an update on ticket sales: “Wrestletix” had just over 6,000 tickets issued when the Ticketmaster pre-sale plan was counted on Monday. This is still a long way from reaching a five-digit audience number. Last year, 11,263 fans came to Arthur Ashe Stadium. In 2021, there were even more than 20,000.
