Tennis: Setback for Emma Raducanu

Tennis star Emma Raducanu has to take a forced break. The 2021 US Open winner missed the upcoming WTA tournament in Beijing.

“Last week in Seoul I sprained some ligaments in my foot which unfortunately still need some time to heal,” Raducanu wrote on the short message service X (formerly Twitter): “This means that I will not be able to play in Beijing, but I hope to be able to compete again as soon as possible.

Raducanu had to retire from the WTA tournament in Seoul last Saturday in the quarterfinals against Daria Kasatkina with the score 1:6 due to injury.

Raducanu originally wanted to take part in the upcoming tournament in Beijing (25 September to 6 October). In the second round, he could have faced Olympic tennis champion Qinwen Zheng, but that will not happen now. Raducanu’s injury does not seem to be too serious.

The 21-year-old has often been slowed down in her young career. Wrist problems put the Brit out of action a year ago.

Recently, Raducanu has worked her way back up the tennis world rankings. The right-hander is currently ranked 54th. For context: Raducanu only returned to the top 100 in mid-JulyThis was preceded by her reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon. At the US Open this year, she was eliminated in the first round after three sets against Sofia Kenin.

Raducanu sensationally won the Grand Slam tournament in New York in 2021 from the qualification. The then 19-year-old beat Leylah Fernandez 6:4 and 6:3 in the final. Seasons with many bitter setbacks followed. Now Raducanu has to take another forced break.
