Huawei Mate 70: Major design change with Face ID and new camera

While Huawei is expected to introduce the Nova 13 series in October, the Mate 70 series with major changes such as Face ID, new design and new camera arrangement, as well as the foldable Mate X6, are expected to follow in November.

Nova 13 in October, Mate 70 and X6 in November

After Huawei introduced the world’s first triple-foldable smartphone, the Huawei Mate XT, at the beginning of the month, which ComputerBase was recently able to take a closer look at in a hands-on, and introduced a new flagship in Germany in the summer with the Pura 70 Ultra (test), further new smartphone announcements are to follow in October and November.

According to a leak from well-known tech tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS), Huawei plans to launch the Nova 13 series in October, followed by the Mate 70 series and the foldable Mate X6 in November.

Face ID, flat metal housing and new camera

The leaks about the Mate 70 series are particularly interesting, as they suggest further design changes and technical improvements. According to them, the Mate 70, or the various smartphones in the Mate 70 series, will be equipped with a centrally located 3D facial recognition system such as Face ID.

The display is also said to be curved in all four directions, with both the Mate 70 and the Mate 70 Pro having a metal casing with flat edges. Previous leaks that suggested an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor in the display contradicted this, but the fingerprint sensor on the new smartphones is said to be housed in the power button.

On the back there will be a centrally arranged, elliptical camera module with a periscope lens. In contrast to the “splicing design” of the Mate 60 series, which uses a mixture of metal and glass on the back, the Mate 70 could be placed entirely on a glass back.

New processor with new manufacturing?

DCS is once again talking about a new processor in the Mate 70 that is supposed to be particularly energy efficient. It remains to be seen what kind of SoC and manufacturing technology this might be. However, a more energy-efficient SoC than the current Kirin SoCs in 7 nm could result in thinner devices, as it would make it possible to dispense with complex heat dissipation materials. Previous leaks about the Mate 70 already speak of a new processor that is said to have a performance above that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

More efficient HarmonyOS Next

In addition to the hardware improvements, the new operating system HarmonyOS Next, which Huawei will introduce on the Mate 70 series, at least in China, will play a key role. HarmonyOS Next alone is expected to provide a performance increase of up to 30 percent, faster connections and a 20 percent reduction in energy consumption.

The Mate series traditionally represents Huawei’s high-end flagships, which – especially before the US sanctions – are in direct competition with Apple and Samsung.
