McLaren reaches settlement over alleged ADA violations

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (WNEM) – McLaren Health Care Corporation agrees to a settlement with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

This was done following an investigation under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act. There were complaints about the provision of assistive devices and services to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing that led to the investigation.

As part of the settlement, McLaren agreed to provide free tools and services to ensure effective communication between the patient and their care. McLaren will also update its policies to comply with the ADA. McLaren will provide $220,000 in financial assistance to 14 individuals affected by the case.

“It is critical that patients who are deaf or hard of hearing have the ability to communicate effectively with their health care providers,” said U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison. “McLaren and its employees provide health care to people across Michigan, including in many rural areas with limited access to health care, so I am especially proud of this resolution and what it means for equal access to health care.”

The investigation was led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael El-Zein and Sunita Doddamani of the Civil Rights Unit.
