Superstar Nadal nominated for Davis Cup finals

Tennis fans can still hope for a comeback from superstar Rafael Nadal at the Davis Cup finals. The 22-time Grand Slam tournament winner was nominated for the Spanish team that fought for the title in the prestigious team competition at the finals from November 19 to 24 in Malaga.

In addition to the injury-plagued Nadal (38), singles players Roberto Bautista Agut and Carlos Alcaraz as well as doubles specialists Pablo Carreno-Busta and Marcel Granollers were also nominated.

Nadal also competed in the doubles competition with Alcaraz (21) at the Olympics in Paris. Spain will face the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarterfinals. The German team has also qualified for the finals in Malaga.

Will Nadal return to the court?

Nadal played his last singles match to date on July 29 in his “living room” at Roland Garros: At the Summer Games in Paris, he had no chance in the second round against the eventual Olympic champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Most recently, the 14-time French Open winner cancelled his participation in the Laver Cup in Berlin last weekend, citing his lack of match fitness. This year, he also skipped the Grand Slam tournaments Wimbledon and US Open. In May of last year, Nadal announced that he would end his illustrious career in 2024, in which he had been repeatedly set back by various injuries.
