CBI questions TMC MP in RG Kar doctor’s rape and murder case

Calcutta: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday summoned Panihati Trinamul Congress MP Nirmal Ghosh and questioned him for seven hours in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH).

Mr. Ghosh was seen at the RGKMCH on August 9 and also a day after the crime. He is said to have played an important role in the hasty cremation of the victim’s body after the autopsy.

His appearance came after Dr Apurba Biswas of the forensic department was questioned by the CBI. Dr Biswas had claimed that he was pressured to speed up the post-mortem for cremation of the body.

Leaving the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake after questioning, Mr Ghosh said, “I went there as a local MP to discharge my moral responsibility. The deceased was from my area. I appeared before the CBI for an appointment.”

He added, “They had to know a lot of things. I had to tell them too. I cannot tell them now.” Meanwhile, a city court extended the jail term of former RGKMCH director Dr Sandip Ghosh and three others by two more weeks in the corruption case in which they were arrested by the CBI.

The quartet was produced before CBI judge Sujit Jha in the Alipore court later in the day. The CBI lawyer claimed that 18 devices seized in the case, including mobile phones and laptops, had been cloned and were being examined. The judge later remanded the four accused in judicial custody till October 7.
