Türkiye submits evidence to International Court of Justice regarding killing of Turkish-American activist

ANTALYA, Türkiye

Ankara will submit evidence to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the killing of Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, the Turkish Justice Minister said on Monday.

“We will submit a (forensic) report on Eygi and provide further evidence to the International Court of Justice. In addition, we will provide evidence as part of the International Criminal Court’s ongoing investigations into Israeli aggressors,” Yilmaz Tunc told reporters in the Mediterranean metropolis of Antalya.

Stressing that Eygi was committed to denouncing the Israeli genocide and defending the rights of oppressed Palestinians, he said: “She took part in a peaceful protest to stand up for human rights. Eygi was a human rights activist and had graduated from a US university this June.”

“We will submit reports on Eygi to the UN Security Council. The genocide trial is ongoing and Turkey has asked to participate,” he added.

Tunc also said that the Palestinian ambassador in Ankara visited the Justice Ministry and presented a file on Eygi and Palestine.

Türkiye continues diplomatic efforts to end ongoing bloodshed

Tunc emphasized the ongoing efforts to protect Eygi’s rights, saying: “Since October 7 (2023), more than 41,000 innocent people have lost their lives in Palestine. 80 percent of them are women and children. Unfortunately, we all see how international organizations remain completely silent on the rights of women and children, thereby demonstrating a clear double standard. We note with regret that the decisions of international organizations and courts do not produce any results.”

He added: “Turkey continues its diplomatic efforts to end the bloodshed. To this end, we continue to express our stance on every platform. Without ending the occupation, creating a free Palestine and withdrawing to the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, the bleeding wound here cannot be healed.”

Israeli murder of peaceful activist

On September 3, Eygi was in the town of Beita in Nablus to take part in a protest against the illegal Israeli settlements. On September 6, she was targeted and killed by an Israeli sniper standing on a nearby rooftop.

Eyewitnesses reported that Eygi was far from the protest area when she was shot in the head. She was taken to a Palestinian hospital, but despite the best efforts of doctors, they were unable to save her.

Eygi was a human rights activist and volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement, which supports Palestinians through peaceful, civil means against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

Ignoring a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire, Israel continues its brutal offensive against Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas last October.

According to local health authorities, more than 41,400 people, mostly women and children, have been killed and over 95,800 injured since then.

The Israeli attack has displaced almost the entire population of the area. The ongoing blockade is leading to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine.

Because of its actions in the Gaza Strip, Israel is facing genocide proceedings before the International Court of Justice.
