Videos show escalation: brawl and police intervention after BGL-Ligue game

It was the topic of conversation of the football weekend. After the seventh matchday of the BGL Ligue, the riots following the duel between FC Wiltz and Progrès Niederkorn are being discussed. But what exactly happened on Saturday evening and what happens next after the incidents?

The game

Niederkorn won 2-1 at the Stade am Pëtz in Weidingen. The visitors had to play with a man down in the second half because Chris Lybohy was shown the red card for violent conduct shortly before the half-time whistle. Niederkorn’s winning goal scorer Kenny Mixtur was also sent off later with a second yellow card. There were seven minutes of stoppage time, after which things became confusing.

The escalation

The video that the Wiltz players recorded with their Veo camera shows how Soiyir Sanali and Kevin Malget clashed. When the former international player fell to the ground, his teammate Jack Mmaee rushed to his aid. He pushed the Niederkorn player and was then attacked by several Fortschritt players. Lybohy is said to have broken Wiltzer Mmaee’s nose. Other players and officials then got involved. The situation was only calmed down when several police officers entered the pitch.

The

“We looked at the scene to see if any of our players had behaved inappropriately.” At this point, I don’t think that was the case. I went onto the field during the incident to mediate and our players tried to de-escalate the situation. I don’t know what happened between Kevin and number 70 (Soiyir Sanali, editor’s note). “Even if something was said, that would not be a reason to throw someone to the ground or break someone’s nose,” said Wiltz President Michael Schenk on Monday.

Progrès President Thomas Gilgemann responded to the incidents with an official statement. “Our club does not tolerate such actions in any way, which damage the image of the club concerned and Luxembourg football in general and do not correspond to the values of our club,” it said. There was already a discussion on Sunday with the coaching team around head coach Jeff Strasser and the players. “Our club believes that in such regrettable situations the blame lies on both sides and would like to focus above all on resolving the harmful behavior of its player.”

According to Gilgemann, a scandal occurred during the party. “Our club cannot accept the proven racist incident that took place during the game and helped to incite hatred. Several people in the main stand made monkey noises when our player Chris Lybohy went to the dressing room early because of a (justified) red card.”

The consequences

FC Progrès lodged a protest during half-time, and Wiltz did so after the game. The FLF Association Court must now decide, with the help of a separate referee report, what consequences the dispute will have for the individual players. Since the match had already been called off at the time of the escalation, nothing will change in the result or the distribution of points.
