Armed suspect arrested at Texas high school football game

Police arrested an armed person at a Texas high school football game on Thursday evening.

A spectator at Killeen Shoemaker’s victory over University on Thursday night has been charged with illegal possession of a firearm, police in Waco, Texas, told KWTX News.

Killeen ISD announced Friday stricter rules for spectators at football games at the district’s Leo Buckley Stadium and Joseph L. Searles Stadium, citing “recent inappropriate and unsafe behavior at football games.”

It is not immediately clear what type of weapon was discovered.

“The safety of our students, staff and community at district events, including football games, is our highest priority,” Killeen ISD Superintendent Jo Ann Fey said in a statement. “Inappropriate and unsafe behavior will not be tolerated.”

The district told KWTX that a district police officer arrested a spectator with a weapon and an officer was injured while trying to break up fights outside the stadium. The game was played to the end.

As part of the changes, students must have a student ID to participate in the game unless accompanied by an adult. Students from schools not participating in the competition will require an adult chaperone. Students must remain in the student areas.

Shoemaker defeated University 36-29. The Wolves are 2-1 after losing their opener to Round Rock and then responding with double-digit wins against Ellison in Week 2 and University in Week 3. The Wolves next host Temple (2-1) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Central Time.
