Monday marks the anniversary of one of the most painful moments for HSV: On September 23, 2018, the club suffered a historic 0:5 home defeat against Jahn Regensburg. Led by hat-trick scorer Sargis Adamyan, Regensburg dominated the Bundesliga relegated team, which revealed major weaknesses. This humiliation was considered the low point after HSV’s first relegation.

Six years later, on September 15, 2024, HSV turned the tables: They got their revenge with a clear 5-0 home win against Regensburg. Goals from Königsdörffer, Glatzel, Selke and Dompé sealed the victory in the game. It was the fifth consecutive victory for Hamburg over Jahn. Regensburg has never been able to win or get a point at the Volksparkstadion since the historic duel six years ago.

After his last-minute equalizer in the game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Davie Selke was voted “Man of the Match” by the HSV fans. The striker secured the important point for his team in injury time and received a lot of recognition for it. “Absolutely deserved,” wrote HSV on X, formerly Twitter.

In addition to Selke, Jean-Luc Dompé and Adam Karabec were also praised for their performances in the game and took second and third place in the vote for player of the match.

After the 2:2 draw at 1. FC Kaiserslautern, HSV coach Steffen Baumgart said he was satisfied with his team’s performance. “I saw a very balanced game in the first half. Lots of possession, but not necessarily in front of the goal,” he explained after the game and stressed that the draw felt “like a point won.” You can read more about the game at the Betzenberg here.

Captain Sebastian Schonlau highlighted the team’s morale: “Coming back to the Betze after a 0-2 defeat is not easy and shows our mentality. The draw feels like a point won.”

Goalscorer Davie Selke, who equalised in injury time, was delighted: “To score the goal in the last second in front of the visitors’ block is what you live for as a striker. It’s just really awesome!”

In an interview with “HSVtv”, Jonas Meffert, a player for Hamburger SV, spoke emotionally about his teammate Mario Vušković. Vušković, who is banned from playing due to a completed doping procedure, still has the full support of his team, according to Meffert. “In moments like these, it’s not just about the sport, but about the person behind it,” explained the midfielder.

“I’m at a loss for words because I’m stunned by how unfair the world can be sometimes. I feel so sorry for Mario.” Meffert also expressed the hope that Vušković will soon be able to return to the team: “My goal is to be able to be on the pitch with Mario again.”
