Suspect shot dead in tender fraud case in Mitchells Plain

No one has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Cape Flats construction manager who was gunned down in Beacon Valley just days after being released on R250 000 bail.

Abdul Kader Davids, who faces corruption charges along with former DA Mayco member Malusi Booi, died in a hail of bullets in Beacon Valley on Thursday night while walking on Ascot Street at around 9pm.

Davids, who was uncovered during a City of Cape Town investigation into a tender deal with the wife of alleged 28s crime boss Ralph Stanfield, subsequently appeared before the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court where he was charged alongside Booi in a tender corruption case worth a whopping R1 billion.

The sole director of ZSM Developers came under scrutiny in July when city manager Lungelo Mbandazyo revealed that Davids had allegedly collaborated with Nicole Johnson and Mohammed Amod of the Boon Group in bidding for city tenders.

A handwriting expert confirmed Mbandazyo’s suspicions that all three tenders were carried out by the same person, allegedly to give Johnson control over the contract.

The investigation also revealed that the tender application from ZSM, which was in competition with Johnson’s company, was in fact also signed by her mother, Barbara.

Davids, who lives in Beacon Valley, told the Cape Town Magistrates Court that he was only working as a cleaner.

However, legal letters written by Mbandazyo to Davids indicate that he was aware of the findings regarding alleged collusion in tenders and had reported the matter to the SAPS Economic Crime Unit.

Davids was released on R250,000 bail in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court last week, despite telling the magistrate he was a cleaner and could only afford R2,500.

According to a source, Davids was attacked while walking along Ascot Street on Thursday evening.

“When police arrived at the scene, they found that he had been shot five times. Once in the shoulder, once in the neck, once in the face and twice in the back. They found him at the scene covered in blood and with five bullet casings.

“According to neighbors, they heard gunshots and when they looked outside, they saw him. Police spoke to his girlfriend, who said he was not a gang member,” the source said.

His murder sparked rumors over the weekend that Davids had considered becoming a key witness.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie confirmed that the murder case is being investigated by the anti-gang unit and that no arrests have been made so far.

“The motive for this murder is currently the subject of an investigation by the South African police. No arrests have been made to date.”
